Lighten Up
Nothing changes the room, the ambience or the mood more than lighting. Do not half-step in this area. You will be rewarded many time over by having a home that feels like a showcase.

If your surroundings are seeming dark and dismal these days, maybe it’s time to look at the lighting and color you have chosen and consider a change.

Lighting changes everything. Soft moods to rock and roll are possible. A dimmer switch is a wonderful thing

Lighting is simple when you remember that dark, dull or matte finishes and surfaces absorb light and light, glossy surfaces reflect light. The lighter the tone and the glossier the finish, the more you will maximize either the natural light that is streaming into your room from windows or sky lights, or the lighting you have chosen to use in your room indirectly from lamps or tracks.

Floor coverings can have the same effect on light as walls and you might want to think of changing to a lighter stone or tile replacing darker linoleum or carpet. Dust and lint show up less on lighter colored flooring even though they may show soil and dirt more. So, it’s a trade off. If you choose to lay Ceramic tile, be sure to consider something with a slight variegation or pattern in it, this will minimize the appearance of dirt. Also, choose a grout color that will not show soil easily. Even though there are some affective grout sealers on the market today, ultimately a well used pathway will darken over time.

You might want to stay with darker color on your walls and enjoy the contrast it gives your room. Lighten it by adding a high gloss to the paint and contrast the trim in your home with stark white. This combination seems to add balance and give light a more reflective quality.

If you have draperies in your room, move them back away from your windows with tie backs. A glossy or satiny fabric will also enhance the lighting in your space and lighten up your environment. If you must have your windows covered for privacy during the day, use a shear fabric in white or light cream that will allow light to flow easily in to your room.

If your room is devoid of windows, make use of mirrors. A small mirror can add depth and light to even the smallest of rooms and are relatively inexpensive. Maximize their use by placing them near a floor lamp or torchier. This will multiply the affect of your artificial lighting.

Using indirect artificial lighting will give your room a lighter feel without the glare of direct lighting. Recessed ceiling lighting can provide a subtle source. Don’t forget to incorporate up lighting. Wall sconces are beautiful and add ambiance to any room as well as a strategically placed canister light directed up and hidden behind a chair or plant can reflect off of the ceiling and back into the room
