Kitchens - Arizona Style
Follow these tips to enhance the ambience of your Arizona Southwest Kitchen

Whether modern or country french or adobe southwest certain principles still apply.

Every home has a heart and the heartbeat resonates from the kitchen. Whether it is small and tucked away or opens to the “Great Room”, it manages to be the gathering place for all to sit or stand around and informally share a glass of wine or a cup of cappuccino. It doubles as a place for entertainment; family meetings, homework and cooking so why not express your personality freely while still providing the necessities.

A PINCH OF COLOR AND A DASH OF FUN

Keep in mind that your tastes change over time so be flexible in picking your major elements. That blue countertop could come back to haunt you.

Choosing cabinets can be overwhelming and time consuming. A favorite in many kitchen remodels seems to be white. This is wonderful fun to splash color against but isn’t right for every kitchen. It does, however, visually expand your kitchen space and gives you a backdrop against which you can play with color and pattern in your accessories. Be careful with white though, too much of it can become glaring and clinical and this is a room that should exude inviting warmth.

Whites are not all alike and choosing the right white is important. Some have undertones of pinks, browns, blues and yellows. Keep in mind your counter and surface colors when choosing a white cabinet tone or paint.

If you choose to go white on your cabinets, the rest of your kitchen décor can be an expression of you and your personality. Bright color on a small exposed wall between cabinets and counters is an eye catcher. Wall papers will add depth and some, even textures to your walls. Remember, color, pattered accessories, and artwork make a kitchen more livable and inviting to both you and your guests. If you spend a lot of time entertaining and cooking, you want this room to be a pleasant one for YOU to be in, one in which you feel comfortable and comforted so make it your own.

Solid colors

Using color is a dramatic and fun way to spice up a white kitchen. Don’t forget theceiling! Try a hue of blue splashed on the ceiling and accessories in contrasting colors. Don’t forget to consider the type of lighting you have in your kitchen. Natural orartificial, they will have an influence on your color.

Fabrics and textures

Visual textures in curtain or cushion fabrics will bring warmth to your white kitchen. This is also a place to add contrasting and coordinating color schemes and patterns.

Stencils

Stenciled wall borders help express YOU. They will draw the eye upward and create more vertical space. White washing your kitchen table and chairs and then, adding stenciling or just patterns in color can be a fun weekend project and another place to bring color to your white kitchen.

Remember that white is your canvas and color is yours to create any mood you choose. Let yourself think outside of the box here and play with two or more colors against that back drop. If you don’t want to be “locked in” to a color scheme, just make sure not to incorporate them into your counter or work top. Don’t add color or decorative tiles, for example that will keep you held to that particular color scheme. If you do add decorative tiles to a back splash or counter top, keep them neutral in the brown or green hues. You will always have the freedom to repaint the walls another contrasting but bold color or bring in new accessories.

Your tastes will change and this idea makes creating a new kitchen mood a breeze with the addition of a few new items strategically placed in the corners or on the table top. No matter how comfortable you create the rest of your home, this will be the place that your family and guests will come so why not take the time to make it as special as you are.
